Cardinals Rival Reportedly 'Have Their Eyes' On Ex-St. Louis Manager To Fill Open Spot
The Milwaukee Brewers have an opening at the manager position that it will need to fill this offseason.
Former Brewers manager Craig Counsell took over the role ahead of the 2015 season and has been the club's skipper ever since. Counsell saw great success with the Brewers and is widely considered one of the best managers in baseball right now. Despite all of the success, Counsell left the club this offseason in a surprise move and stayed within the division, and was named the new manager of the Chicago Cubs.
Now the Brewers need to find someone to replace Counsell and the club reportedly "have their eyes" on former St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Shildt, according to USA Today Sports' Bob Nightengale.
"The Milwaukee Brewers, who are strongly considering promoting bench coach Pat Murphy, also have their eyes on Mike Shildt if he’s not hired by the San Diego Padres," Nightengale said.
Shildt took over the Cardinals in 2018 and was the club's manager through the 2021 season. While with St. Louis, he was named the 2019 National League Manager of the Year but was let go at the end of the 2021 campaign. He has been working in the San Diego Padres organization and is in the running to land their open manager spot but it sounds like if that does not happen, he could be back in the National League Central division when the 2024 season rolls around.
It's too early to tell, but it sounds like he at least will be in the running for the open Brewers job.
