The St. Louis Cardinals without a doubt have underachieved this season, but things may finally be turning around.

Many expected St. Louis to finish atop the National League Central standings yet again after compiling 93 wins in 2022 and returning much of the same roster this year. The Cardinals even made some intriguing additions this past offseason, but the season has not gone as planned by any stretch of the imagination.

St. Louis currently is tied for the worst record in the National League at 16-25, but the club is playing its best baseball of the season right now. The Cardinals completed a three-game sweep over the Boston Red Sox on Sunday night and now have now won six of their last seven games.

One player who has turned things around since the start of May certainly has been star third baseman Nolan Arenado. Like the club has a whole, he has had an uncharacteristic season so far. The seven-time All-Star is slashing just .256/.302.406 so far this season with six home runs and 26 RBIs. He started off the season very slowly, but has started to turn things around in May.

In 11 games so far in May, Arenado has looked more like himself and is slashing .298/.353/.617 to go along with four home runs and 12 RBIs. St. Louis' matchup with the Red Sox couldn't come soon enough for Arenado as he clubbed a home run in each of the three wins and drove in seven runs over the course of the three-game sweep.

Arenado starting to look like himself and the club's starting rotation starting to take shape has made the Cardinals slowly, but surely start looking like the club we all expected heading into 2023. While their record still isn't great, the Cardinals are 7.5 games back in the NL Central and have plenty of time to make up the ground.
