Cardinals Star Paul Goldschmidt Reportedly Takes Hard Stance On Future With Club
What will the St. Louis Cardinals do this offseason?
After such an underwhelming season in 2023, the Cardinals have more question marks on the roster than they would hope for. St. Louis had its worst season in recent memory finishing in last place in the National League Central with a 71-91 record.
The Cardinals will be busy this offseason and will focus on improving the starting rotation but other questions will need to be answered. One of the biggest is the future of star first baseman Paul Goldschmidt. He surprisingly found his name in trade rumors this season and is under contract for just one more season. He is in line for an extension this offseason but if a deal isn't able to come to fruition, trade talks could commence again.
Although this is the case, Goldschmidt has made it known he wants to stay in town, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch's Derrick Goold.
“I want to come back, and we want to win,” Goldschmidt said as transcribed by Goold. “We want to get into the playoffs. We want to win the World Series. That’s where the focus is. Obviously, we came up very short this year. But I don’t think those expectations need to change. When we get into spring training that will be the message. We’re preparing to win championships. I don’t think that will ever change with this organization.”
Goldschmidt had a down year for his standards but took home the 2022 National League Most Valuable Player award. If St. Louis is going to get back to the postseason in 2024, Goldschmidt likely will play a major role. It's very unlikely he is moved this offseason and the most likely result is the two sides agree on an extension. There has been a lot of chatter about his future, but it would be a shock if he isn't with the club for the foreseeable future.
