Cardinals Top Prospect Shining In Minors; Could St. Louis Give Young Stud Chance Soon?
The St. Louis Cardinals may not be what many expected them to be this season, but that doesn't mean the club doesn't have a bright future.
St. Louis currently is in last place in the National League Central with a disappointing 32-45 record but there still is reason for hope for the future. Young phenom Jordan Walker has shown that he potentially is a star in the making. At just 21 years old, Walker is slashing .302/.366/.475 to go along with six home runs and 20 RBIs in 39 games.
Now that Walker has spent enough time in the big leagues, he no longer is classified as the Cardinals' top prospect. Now, that title is held by young shortstop Masyn Winn and he too could soon find himself on the field at Busch Stadium.
Winn was drafted in the second round of the 2020 MLB June Amateur Draft and has quickly shot up the organization's farm system. The 21-year-old has spent the entire 2023 season with the Memphis Redbirds and has slashed .258/.332/.384 to go along with eight home runs, four triples, 14 stolen bases, and 29 RBIs in 70 games so far this season. Winn has been impressive lately and has collected at least one hit in 24 of his last 28 games.
The Cardinals have a surplus of infielders, but at this point in the season it wouldn't hurt to give Winn a chance at the big-league level. St. Louis is 13 games below .500 and it still certainly is possible that the club could turn things around, and a jolt of energy in the lineup could be just what they need. Walker's promotion to the big leagues at a young age certainly has paid off already, maybe Winn could do the same.
With the trade deadline quickly approaching, the Cardinals likely won't look exactly the same afterward. Hopefully, Winn can get a chance at some point shortly.
