Dodgers Reportedly Interested In Pair Of Cardinals Sluggers At Trade Deadline
The St. Louis Cardinals are just days away from unloading significant pieces off their roster and the Los Angeles Dodgers appear to be the perfect trade match.
The Dodgers need starting pitching and outfield help. They also have the consensus top farm system stocked with 12 pitching prospects in their top 30 according to MLB Pipeline.
The Athletic's Fabian Ardaya reported Saturday that the Dodgers need a right-handed bat and correctly predicted that Los Angeles would inquire about Kiké Hernández, whom they just traded for.
Ardaya also wrote that Cardinals outfielders Tyler O'Neill and Dylan Carlson could be options the Dodgers turn toward.
The Dodgers are at the top of the National League West division and are looking to add a steady right-handed bat who will perform come October. With center fielder Trayce Thompson performing poorly and left fielder Jonny DeLuca putting up inconsistent numbers, the Dodgers are left with a void that needs to be filled.
O'Neill is hitting .234/.311/.346 and Carlson is hitting .233/.335/.354. Neither player has carried St. Louis offensively but they both have serious pop and are above-average defenders. The former would be under team control through 2024 and the latter through 2026.
It would make the most sense for the Cardinals to package Jordan Montgomery with one of both outfielders to get the largest return possible. The Dodgers farm system should be St. Louis' top target given their aforementioned vast pitching prospect depth.
