Ex-Cardinals All-Star Reportedly Could Be Traded; Should Club Consider Reunion?
There's no way for sure to know what the St. Louis Cardinals will do ahead of the 2023 MLB Trade Deadline.
St. Louis is in a precarious position. The Cardinals have struggled all season to this point but still have plenty of talent on the roster. St. Louis is in last place in the National League Central at 36-51 and at this point may be more likely to compete for a postseason spot in 2024 than this season.
A major shakeup may be what the club needs to get back on track. St. Louis has been long rumored to potentially deal two of its starting pitchers in Jack Flaherty and Jordan Montgomery so the club is going to have to make some decisions about its rotation shortly. If the Cardinals do deal Flaherty and Montgomery, maybe a reunion with Lance Lynn could make sense. The former Cardinal and current Chicago White Sox hurler reportedly could be on the move, according to the New York Post's Jon Heyman.
"Don’t be fooled by the 6-plus ERA, he could help someone," Heyman said. Trade chances: 50 percent."
Lynn has struggled so far this season pitching to a 6.03 ERA, but has shown some signs of his old self lately. The 36-year-old has compiled a 3.86 ERA over his last four starts including a dazzling seven-inning, 11-strikeout masterpiece against the Toronto Blue Jays. Due to his struggles this season, his price tag may not be exceptionally high. The Cardinals are going to have some holes to fill on the roster and maybe a reunion could make some sense.
The 36-year-old spent the first six years of his career in St. Louis and earned an All-Star nod and helped lead the club to the 2011 World Series. Lynn compiled a 3.99 ERA last season. Maybe it makes some sense to consider a reunion. All in all, the Cardinals are certainly going to be busy over the next few weeks.
