Ex-Cardinals Hurler Officially Announces His Retirement Despite Successful Season
One former St. Louis Cardinals draft pick is calling it a career.
Former Cardinals pitcher Ryan Sherriff officially announced his retirement from baseball on Instagram on Thursday after a 13-year professional career.
"13 years, 2 World Series appearances, (two-time) Triple-A All-Star (2016 & 2017), (one-time) (World Baseball Classic) qualifier, 28th round draft pick from Culver City, (California), I can definitely hang my cleats up knowing I gave it all I can," Sherriff said on Instagram. "I want to thank everybody who was on this journey with me for over a decade. Thank you."
St. Louis drafted Sherriff in the 28th round of the 2011 Major League Baseball June Amateur Draft. The lefty began his professional career as a member of the Johnson City Cardinals in the Appalachian League in 2011. He quickly was promoted to the Low-A Batavia Muckdogs. He rose up the Cardinals' farm system and eventually made his big league debut with St. Louis in 2017.
Sherriff made 18 overall appearances with the Cardinals across the 2017 and 2018 seasons before being released by the club. After leaving the Cardinals, Sherriff saw time at the big league level with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2020 and 2021 and most recently spent time with the Boston Red Sox this season before being designated for assignment and signing a minor league deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Overall, Sherriff appeared in 49 games throughout his big league career and compiled a 3.53 ERA with 41 strikeouts in 51 innings pitched.
