Ex-Cardinals Utility Man Reportedly Cut By NL West Club Despite Solid Start To 2023 Season
The Arizona Diamondbacks reportedly released a former member of the St. Louis Cardinals.
Former Cardinals utility man Yairo Munoz reportedly was cut by Arizona on Monday, according to the MiLB transaction wire.
Munoz -- who last saw big league action in 2022 as a member of the Philadelphia Phillies -- signed with the Diamondbacks ahead of the 2023 season to a minor league contract. The 28-year-old began the season on the injured list but was solid with the Triple-A Reno Aces when healthy. In 12 games, Munoz slashed .304/.389/.391 to go along with four doubles and five RBIs.
The 28-year-old began his professional career in 2012 after being signed as an international free agent by the Oakland Athletics but actually made his big league debut with the Cardinals in 2018. Munoz spent the 2018 and 2019 seasons with St. Louis and in that span saw the most big league success of his career so far. Over that span, Munoz slashed .273/.331/.391 to go along with 10 home runs and 55 RBIs. The 28-year-old not only was impressive offensively, but was flexible defensively and saw time at every position aside from pitcher, catcher, and first base at the big league level.
At this point, it wouldn't be too surprising to see another club take a chance on Munoz. In his MLB career, Munoz has appeared in 242 games across five seasons and has slashed .268/.319/.396 to go along with 14 home runs and 66 RBIs. The utility man has shown that he can play pretty much every position across the field and his offensive play has been consistent. Munoz was impressive at the Triple-A level but in a small sample size. A team likely won't offer a big league spot to Munoz right away, but don't be surprised if you see the former Cardinal joining another club on a minor league deal shortly.
