Ex-Dodgers All-Star Could Be Intriguing Pickup To Improve Cardinals' Starting Rotation
The St. Louis Cardinals already have made major changes in the starting rotation but could more moves be on the way?
St. Louis entered the offseason hoping to add at least three hurlers. The Cardinals did just that almost immediately when free agency kicked off by adding Sonny Gray, Lance Lynn, and Kyle Gibson.
The Cardinals may not end up adding another starter this offseason and certainly seem to be out on the biggest names available like Blake Snell or Jordan Montgomery. While this may be the case, if a cheaper option with upside is available, why not make another move after such a disappointing 2023 season?
There still are plenty of solid pitchers still available because free agency has been extremely slow so far this offseason. One player who could be an intriguing option is former Atlanta Braves, Los Angeles Dodgers, Cincinnati Reds, and San Francisco Giants hurler Alex Wood.
Wood is an 11-year veteran and is still just 32 years old. He has a career 3.76 ERA and one All-Star nod under his belt as a member of the Dodgers. Wood logged a 4.33 ERA in 2023 as a member of the Giants in 29 total appearances -- although he made just 12 starts.
St. Louis' biggest issue last season was a lack of reliable starting pitching depth. The Cardinals look better on paper right now, but it wouldn't hurt to add more depth. Especially someone who could be a relief option as well. Wood could fit both roles comfortably.
The Cardinals could be a playoff team again in 2024 if the rotation returns to form. They may not add another hurler, but someone like Wood could be a name to look out for.
