Here's What Cardinals Reportedly Are Looking For In Trade For Outfielder Tyler O'Neill
The St. Louis Cardinals are looking to make a move.
It has been speculated on many occasions at this point that the Cardinals were interested in trading at least one of their outfielders to clear up a log jam. The three most likely candidates to be moved have been Tyler O'Neill, Dylan Carlson, and Alec Burleson.
Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak addressed the possibility of a move Monday at the Winter Meetings and specifically mentioned that the club is looking to move O'Neill this offseason. It sounds like a trade will happen and the club reportedly is looking to deal him for pitching, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch's Derrick Goold.
"As the winter meetings opened in earnest Monday at the Opryland Hotel, the president of baseball operations took the rare step of acknowledging a player the Cardinals are shopping, by name," Goold said. "The Cardinals would like to swap O’Neill, who is a year away from free agency, for one of the relievers they intend to add to the bullpen or include him in a deal if it helps them net a frontline starter. The Cardinals do not feel a trade is close, but they seek to change that in the remaining days in Nashville."
O'Neill at one point seemed poised to be the left fielder of the future for the Cardinals He finished eighth in the National League Most Valuable Player voting in 2021 and already has two Gold Glove Awards under his belt.
Although he has a solid upside, he has not been able to stay healthy over the last few years and at this point, it looks like he has played his last game with the Cardinals.
