Pair Of Cardinals Hurlers Reportedly Could Be Cut After Lackluster Seasons
The St. Louis Cardinals might be ready to sever ties with two pitchers, which would add even more to their list of offseason needs.
The Cardinals had an above-all disappointing year, but one area where they lacked the most was on the mound. Acquiring reliable arms is undoubtedly on the to-do list, but that list might be extended soon.
"(Dakota) Hudson has had some stellar moments since debuting in 2018, but he’s likely headed for a fresh start elsewhere," MLB.com's John Denton wrote Wednesday. "The same goes for (Jake) Woodford."
Hudson had a career-high 4.98 ERA with a 45-to-34 strikeout-to-walk ratio, .283 batting average against and a 1.50 WHIP in 81 1/3 innings pitched this season.
Woodford struggled this season and also had a career-high 6.23 ERA with a 29-to-22 strikeout-to-walk ratio, .314 batting average against and a 1.74 WHIP in 47 2/3 innings this season.
Although the Cardinals are looking to add to their pitching staff, letting Woodford and Hudson move on would be a step in the right direction. The team's payroll is around $144 million, and the money available would be best spent on more reliable arms.
