Polarizing Cardinals Star Reportedly Could Be Shut Down For Season Due To Latest Injury
The St. Louis Cardinals may be without the services of one of their stars for the rest of the season.
St. Louis catcher Willson Contreras was forced to leave the club's loss against the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday due to a left wrist injury. Contreras reportedly could miss the rest of the season due to the injury, according to The Athletic's Katie Woo.
"Things don't sound promising for Willson Contreras, who is out of the lineup today after being removed from yesterday's game with left wrist discomfort," Woo said. "Cardinals are mulling over a season-ending IL stint and will have a definitive answer at the end of the game."
Contreras has had an interesting season, to say the least. The three-time All-Star joined the Cardinals as a free agent this past offseason and had a tough start with the club. St. Louis changed Contreras' role multiple times early, which likely hurt his offensive production. He began to shine once he was put back in a solidified role. Contreras has been one of the best hitters in baseball in the second half of the season and has clubbed 20 home runs, driven in 67 runs, and has a slash line of .264/.358/4.67 in 125 games played.
St. Louis has just 10 games left this season so it wouldn't make much sense to rush him back to the lineup and risk further injury. Although the beginning of the season was strange, Contreras overall had a very impressive season and should only improve in his second season with the club in 2024.
