Red Sox Reportedly Linked To Former Cardinals Stud As Possible Offseason Pickup
The Boston Red Sox and St. Louis Cardinals have a similar need this offseason.
Both clubs underachieved this season in a major way and have to make a big statement this offseason. The Red Sox and Cardinals -- like many clubs -- need to improve their starting rotations this offseason. There are going to be plenty of big-name players available this offseason and the Red Sox reportedly could look to land one of St. Louis' possible targets in Jordan Montgomery, according to MassLive.com's Christopher Smith.
"The 30-year-old lefty has plenty of (American League East) experience, starting 97 games for the (New York Yankees) from 2017-22," Smith said. "Montgomery, who throws a nasty curveball, finished the regular season with a 3.20 ERA and 1.19 WHIP in 32 starts (188 2/3 innings) between the Cardinals and (Texas Rangers). He recorded a 2.79 ERA and allowed just 1.7 walks per nine innings in 11 starts with Texas who acquired him July 30.
"He dominated his Wild Card start against the (Tampa Bay Rays) with seven shutout innings. He received a no-decision in his ALDS start vs. the (Baltimore Orioles), allowing five runs (four earned runs) in four innings."
Montgomery was acquired by the Cardinals in 2022 and impressed but was traded by the club to the Texas Rangers ahead of the 2023 Major League Baseball Trade Deadline. St. Louis struggled this season and ended up being sellers ahead of the trade deadline but has been linked to Montgomery in a possible offseason reunion. The Cardinals need to improve their pitching and adding Montgomery would be a solid addition.
There's going to be plenty of competition for starting pitching this offseason. The Cardinals are going to need to strike early and spend big if they want to win out.
