Reinforcements Reportedly On Way For Cardinals; Could Turnaround Be Imminent?
The St. Louis Cardinals certainly have played well below expectations so far this season.
St. Louis currently is 10-20 on the season and is in last place in the National League Central. The Cardinals currently are 10 games back from the surprisingly first-place Pittsburgh Pirates who are 20-10 so far this season.
At points, the club's offense has been impressive, but it has been inconsistent. St. Louis' starting pitching has been the team's Achilles heel all season to this point, but help is on the way. Longtime Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright reportedly will return to the mound for the club Saturday, according to The Athletic's Katie Woo.
"The plan is for Adam Wainwright to make his 2023 debut on Saturday at Busch Stadium against Detroit," Woo said.
Wainwright has missed the entire season to this point while dealing with an injury he suffered at the World Baseball Classic. The 41-year-old has spent his entire 17-year career with the Cardinals and should be a welcomed sight due to the club's pitching struggles to begin the season.
He may not be exactly what he once was, but Wainwright is a veteran who should be able to provide the club more stability. He may be 41 years old, but he still compiled a 3.71 ERA in 2022 and a 3.05 ERA in 2021. The three-time All-Star is in his final big league season, but certainly still has plenty of gas in the tank.
Wainwright's return should give the club another dependable option while pushing one of the struggling starters to the bullpen. St. Louis may be 10-20, but the club has plenty of talent should be able to turn things around once the rotation stabilizes. Wainwright may not an All-Star any longer, but he should give the club exactly what it needs. Hopefully his return will be the first step in the club's turnaround.
