White Sox Reportedly 'Nearing MLB Deal' With Former Cardinals All-Star
It sounds like one former member of the St. Louis Cardinals may have found himself a new home.
Former Cardinals shortstop Paul DeJong spent the first seven-plus years of his career with the Cardinals before being traded to the Toronto Blue Jays ahead of the trade deadline. DeJong also spent time with the San Francisco Giants in 2023.
DeJong now is a free agent. Although he had a down year in 2023, he has some upside and reportedly is nearing a deal to join the Chicago White Sox, according to the New York Post's Jon Heyman.
"Paul DeJong nearing MLB deal with White Sox," Heyman said.
DeJong finished the 2023 season with 14 home runs, 38 RBIs, and a .207/.258/.355 slash line across 112 games played. He was drafted in the fourth round of the 2015 Major League Baseball June Amateur Draft by the Cardinals and eventually made his big league debut in 2017. He finished second in the National League Rookie of the Year voting that year and made his long All-Star appearance in 2019.
Since then he has dealt with a plethora of injuries and hasn't seemed to get back to his former level of play. Although this is the case, if he officially signs with the White Sox he likely will at least get a solid chance at playing time as he looks to bounce back. Chicago currently has Romy Gonzalez on the 40-man roster in the middle infield but likely won't bring Tim Anderson back.
