Yankees, Astros Reportedly Among Clubs Targeting Ex-Cardinals Flamethrower
One former member of the St. Louis Cardinals seemingly has a massive market in free agency.
St. Louis had one of the worst seasons in recent memory in 2023 and it forced the club to be in an unfamiliar position as a seller ahead of the trade deadline. Despite rumblings about a possible extension, the Cardinals traded away fireballer Jordan Hicks to the Toronto Blue Jays.
The Cardinals are looking to improve the bullpen this offseason and have been linked to Hicks as a possible reunion candidate. St. Louis will have plenty of competition, though. Two teams that also are targeting Hicks are the New York Yankees and Houston Astros, according to MLB Network's Jon Morosi.
"Free agent reliever Jordan Hicks has drawn interest from the Astros and Yankees, among other teams, as we discussed on MLB Network a short time ago," Morosi said.
Hicks is a rising star so it isn't too surprising that his market is so robust. The 27-year-old has a blistering fastball that approaches 105 miles per hour. He had arguably the best season of his career in 2023 and logged a 3.29 ERA in 65 total appearances with the Cardinals and Blue Jays to go along with an 81-to-32 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
St. Louis has some work to do and landing Hicks would be a great place to start, but it sounds like New York and Houston both are interested as well. The Yankees have been linked to Hicks on multiple occasions this offseason and it wouldn't be surprising to see them swoop in and get a deal done.
Hicks' market is heating up so don't be surprised if he signs shortly.
