Cardinals GM Reveals Who Could Be Next Great St. Louis Centerfielder
With the St. Louis Cardinals going through one of their worst seasons in club history, all eyes are on the organization's future.
The poor performance of the Cardinals' pitching staff has forced the ball club to invest in pitching prospects, however, an emerging center fielder is gaining general manger Michael Girsch's attention.
"In the longer term, Victor Scott (II) has rocketed up our awareness board," Girsch said on ESPN 101 St. Louis radio's "BK & Ferrario" last week. "He had a great year at A-ball and now at Double-A… In the medium term, he’s pushing his way onto the radar for what centerfield might look like."
Scott is hitting .301 with 25 extra-base hits including four home runs, 46 RBIs and a .779 OPS in 98 games between Single-A Peoria and Double-A Springfield. The speedster is most known for his ability on the basepaths and has swiped 74 bags in 83 attempts this season.
Drafted in 2022 by St. Louis, Scott has been steadily working his way up the ladder and is having an explosive second season in the minors where he was promoted to Doube-A Springfield after excelling in 66 games with Single-A Peoria.
The 22-year-old centerfielder has climbed his way up the Cardinals' top prospect list in which he rose from No. 25 to No. 4 in the most recent MLB Pipeline top 30 prospect ranking.
St. Louis currently has an abundance of centerfielder options in Lars Nootbar, Dylan Carlson, Tyler O'Neill and Tommy Edman but that can change very quickly with the way this season has gone.
Scott will need at least another full season in the minors but could be a difference-maker in 2025 and beyond.
