Cardinals Top Prospect Wins Minor League Gold Glove Award As Stock Rises
The St. Louis Cardinals 2023 season was disappointing, to say the least, and it is difficult to look back and take anything positive from it.
Fortunately, the Cardinals have a solid farm system of talent -- providing St. Louis with hope for the future and options going into this offseason.
Of all the talent in the Cardinals farm system, one prospect is being recognized for his exceptional defensive skills, according to the St. Louis Post Dispatch's Daniel Guerrero.
"(Victor) Scott (II) was awarded the Rawlings Minor League Gold Glove for his play in center field" Guerrero reported Tuesday.
Scott gave up only three errors and recorded a 0.99 fielding percentage over 1,130 1/3 innings in 129 games played between Class High-A Peoria and Double-AA Springfield in 2023.
The 22-year-old stud is making noise in just his second season in the league with not only his glove but also his speed on the basepath and consistency at the plate.
The young center fielder stole 94 bases in 108 attempts and also logged 166 hits -- the second most by any player in Minor League Baseball in 2023, only trailing fellow Cardinals prospect Thomas Saggese with 170.
On the whole, Scott hit .303 with 39 extra-base hits including nine home runs, 63 RBIs and a .794 OPS in 132 games. Combined with his elite baserunning and Gold Glove defense, he's become one of the better all-around players in the system. Scott is currently the No. 4 player in the Cardinals farm system according to MLB Pipeline.
The Cardinals have a plethora of outfielders with Lars Nootbar seeming to have center field locked down when healthy, but between potential trades and impending injuries, he could work his way up to the 40-man roster.
We may not see Scott get the call-up just yet as he still has more to prove, but it's looking as if he'll suit up for the Cardinals in the near future.
