Chicago Cubs in Agreement With Potential Cody Bellinger Replacement
The Chicago Cubs have finally landed an outfielder to fill their massive need.
However, it wasn't the one that most expected.
Cody Bellinger is still on the market and the latest Cubs move could be an indication that he's not coming back.
It was reported on Monday that Bellinger and Chicago have had discussions but not a negotiation.
Perhaps, this signing could be the reason why.
According to Robert Murray of FanSided, the Cubs are in agreement with outfielder David Peralta. The 36-year-old, has spent 10 years in the big leagues with the Arizona Diamondbacks, Tampa Bay Rays, and Los Angeles Dodgers.
Peralta played 118 games in left field and 12 in right field last season.
Chicago needed to add to their lineup and did so by signing the veteran. He last appeared with the Dodgers in 2023, playing in 133 games and slashing .259/.294/.381 with seven home runs.
There's still a massive need for another piece on this offense. The Cubs, as currently constructed, need to improve offensively.
This doesn't guarantee that they're out of the race for Bellinger, but it's a bit of a concerning sign.
But, by not re-signing Bellinger, that does give Pete Crow-Armstrong a better chance to play this season and get starting reps in center for the entire year.
With Matt Chapman still on the market, it wouldn't be surprising to see that front start to heat up.
Chapman gives them value in a position of need, and if Bellinger and the club haven't had any negotiations at a deal at this point, it could indicate the front office is starting to look elsewhere.
More has to be done, and should be done, if Chicago wants to become true contenders to compete for the NL Central title.
