Willson Contreras Placed on Injured List With Left Ankle Sprain

Chicago Cubs catcher Willson Contreras had been trying to play through a left ankle sprain he suffered in the Field of Dreams game, but was finally placed on the injured list Tuesday.

The Athletic's Patrick Mooney broke the news that the Chicago Cubs would be placing catcher Willson Contreras on the injured list with a left ankle sprain. The placement is retroactive to Sep. 3 on the 10-day IL. The backstop suffered the injury on Aug. 11 in the Field of Dreams game.

The 30-year-old appeared in 12 games since suffering the injury and had a 119 wRC+ over that span. However Contreras' ankle injury has worsened, and he hasn't appeared in a game since Aug. 30.

As a corresponding move, the Cubs activated and called up outfielder Michael Hermosillo who had been out since early May with a left quadriceps strain. The 27-year-old had just two hits in his first 28 at-bats but has been playing much better on his rehab assignment, posting an OPS of 1.300 in his six Triple-A games.

Chicago also activated left-handed starting pitcher Wade Miley who had been out since June 10. The Cubs designated pitchers Nicholas Padilla and Luke Farrell for assignment.
