Chicago Cubs Could Target Former Fan Favorite to Replace Star Slugger
Throughout the entire offseason, the Chicago Cubs and Cody Bellinger saga dominated the headlines.
Centered around financials, it looked for a while that a reunion between the two sides would not happen and there would be a major hole in their lineup that the former MVP held last year.
But, mercifully, the saga came to an end with Bellinger signing a three-year, $80 million deal to return.
Next winter could present the same thing that this offseason did, since the star slugger has opt-out clauses in his contract where he can test free agency once again.
If that's the case, the Cubs might turn to their former fan favorite and pursue a reunion with Anthony Rizzo if the New York Yankees decline his $17 million club option after the season.
The lefty slugger was a major part of Chicago winning the World Series in 2016 when he put together an All-Star year with Gold Glove and Silver Slugger awards as well.
Even at 34 years old, Rizzo is still an above-average hitter.
Last season was the first time since his debut year in 2011 where he finished with an OPS+ below 100. Much of that was due to a concussion he sustained and dealt with the aftereffects for many months.
Prior to that, he was putting together a fantastic season.
This will be a huge year for Rizzo because if he puts together a great performance like he's capable of having, then the Yankees likely bring him back. But if he struggles, then he will be on the open market.
That's where the Cubs might be able to strike.
If Bellinger hits free agency again, the front office might be more comfortable letting top prospect Pete Crow-Armstrong take over in center field after another season of development.
Rizzo would then take over at first base along with Michael Busch.
Having the former franchise icon back would be awesome, especially as he's coming up on the end of his career.
