Chicago Cubs Get Positive Update on Cody Bellinger's Free-Agency
Despite all of the rumors, the Chicago Cubs still haven't re-signed Cody Bellinger this offseason.
The former MVP has been linked to the Cubs since 2023 ended, yet no deal has come his way.
He put up a career-saving year in Chicago, and given the clubs' need for a high-level bat, it makes sense for both sides to spend more seasons together.
As Bellinger continues to search for a home before Spring Training begins, a decision would ideally come within the next few weeks at the very latest. He's already a bit behind schedule in terms of when people expected him to sign.
According to Jon Heyman of B/R Walk-Off, the Cubs are the "favorites" for Bellinger.
Heyman also notes that he could see the usual suspects of the Toronto Blue Jays, San Francisco Giants, and possibly the Seattle Mariners landing the slugger as well.
These are the same groups of teams who have been linked to him throughout the offseason.
Still, is big news for the front office as re-signing Bellinger makes them a much better team than if they weren't able to land him.
The left-handed slugger is likely going to command an expensive contract, something that the front office has been hesitant to give. But with the situation this current Chicago lineup is in, they don't have much of a choice but to pay him what he's looking for.
As presently constructed, this is a below-average Cubs offense.
If they don't re-sign Bellinger, not only will they miss his bat, but they have no protection for other players in the lineup.
Seiya Suzuki and others could have a down year throughout 162 games if they don't have anyone around them who's a threat at the plate.
Bellinger proved he can play in Chicago, which isn't something everyone can do. Now, it's time to pay him and allow him to show why it was the right move.
