Chicago Cubs Have Wild, Historic Two Game Stretch
The excitement is palpable for Chicago Cubs nation following the trade deadline. They are red hot and pushing for the playoffs after originally thinking the team was going to be sellers for the third straight year.
Not only is the divisional title in their sights, sitting three games out of first place, but the Cubs are in the Wild Card hunt as well, two-and-a-half games behind.
All that excitement bubbled over during a two game stretch against the Cincinnati Reds.
Chicago put up a pair of offensive games that made franchise and MLB history.
With 36 runs scored in their last two games, that's the most they've had in consecutive games since the 1900s and the first time they've accomplished it since June 29-30 in 1897 according to Cubs historian Ed Hartig.
As if that wasn't eye opening enough, it was the first time in AL/NL history a team recorded 10 extra-base hits and five home runs in back-to-back games.
The offense has led the way during Chicago's 12-3 stretch. Since the All-Star break the Cubs lead MLB with 145 runs scored.
That's without the production of their star outfielder Seiya Suzuki, who seemingly has the only cold bat in the lineup and has been pushed down the batting order.
Manager David Ross knows they are back in the hunt but wants to keep things focused on the task at hand.
"We haven't done anything up to this point. We're still a good way back from the team across the way. We’ve got to go out and compete. A couple more games with them and chase down this thing," he said.
One thing is for certain, with Chicago chasing down their first playoff appearance in three years, Wrigley Field is going to be buzzing every time they play.
