Chicago Cubs Linked to Star in Wild Trade Scenario
When crazy trade rumors start being floated around, that's when the Hot Stove has officially begun. That's the case for the Chicago Cubs right now as they've been included in a wild trade scenario that would land them a star player.
The Cubs are seen as a team that will be aggressive this offseason as they piece together a plan that makes them contenders for years to come.
They've stated their goal is to re-sign Cody Bellinger, but Chicago has also been linked to high-profile free agents like Shohei Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Blake Snell, Matt Chapman and others as well.
Now, the Cubs are being connected to Bo Bichette in a trade rumor that epitomizes what the Hot Stove is all about.
The rumors first started with a social media post from an account named "The Reverend KFidds," who said, "I wonder how #Cubs fans would feel about Bo Bichette playing every day at Wrigley..."
It was a seemingly innocuous post until Matt Cozzi, host of the podcast "Locked On Cubs," put out his own social media post saying that he's hearing Chicago has talked to the Toronto Blue Jays about acquiring Bichette this offseason.
Those two posts might just seem like speculation, but MLB insider Jon Morosi previously threw out the possibility that the Cubs would trade for the star shortstop last offseason.
"The Cubs are very, very motivated to put a ton of their prospect value into a deal … I just believe there are some scenarios – not now – but later in the offseason in which the Jays would at least entertain the possibility of a Bo Bichette trade," he said.
His speculation was contingent upon Chicago not being able to sign Dansby Swanson last year. Swanson became a defensive stalwart for them in 2023, winning a Gold Glove.
If this trade were to take place, it would have to be under the notion that Bichette would move over to third base, where the Cubs have a need.
All in all, while this trade rumor is exciting, it's very unlikely that the Blue Jays would be willing to part with one of their burgeoning superstar players. Chicago would have to give up a ton of capital as well, something they are also not likely to do.
