Chicago Cubs Might Have Scouted Former World Series Winning Closer at Workout
The Chicago Cubs are one of the teams who have been linked to just about every player throughout the offseason.
With everyone knowing they were eyeing stars, it's been an easy connection to make between the marquee free agents and the Cubs.
However, they really haven't been able to land any of the big names, besides Shota Imanaga and the savvy signing of Hector Neris.
Those are solid players, but definitely are not Shohei Ohtani or Yoshinobu Yamamoto.
Getting one of Matt Chapman or Cody Bellinger, who they still are seen as the favorites to land, would change some of that perception.
But, Chicago might have their eye on adding another player to their clubhouse who has World Series winning pedigree.
Eight-year veteran, Ken Giles, is attempting his Major League comeback after last appearing in a game with the Seattle Mariners in 2022.
There was some video released during his throwing session in Phoenix where scouts from different teams across the MLB were in attendance. Based on who was tagged on the post, it seems like the Cubs might have been one of those teams.
After being designated for assignment by the Mariners, he's toiled around in the minor leagues with the San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers.
Giles was part of the World Series winning team with the Houston Astros in 2017, recording 34 saves that season. He had 61 overall during his roughly two-and-a-half-year tenure there.
With so many issues the Chicago bullpen had last year, which cost them a trip to the playoffs, adding another arm for cheap is not a bad option.
It's unclear what type of contract Giles is looking for on his journey to get back into the MLB, but if it's something reasonable, the Cubs should definitely look to explore it if they were impressed by what they saw.
