Chicago Cubs Once Again Linked to Superstar Slugger in Blockbuster Trade
It was expected that the Chicago Cubs would be busy this offseason as they preached about becoming true contenders for the foreseeable future.
Perhaps their first major move was one that nobody saw coming, hiring Craig Counsell as their next manager and moving on from David Ross.
But ultimately, it comes down to the talent on the field and the Cubs are poised to be major players within free agency and the trade markets.
It's been rumored that Chicago will do everything in their power to acquire superstar slugger Pete Alonso from the New York Mets this offseason, and once again, they have been linked as a potential suitor.
"The Cubs, Mariners and Giants have been rumored as possible destinations if Alonso is traded," former MLB executive Jim Bowden writes for The Athletic following general managers meetings that took place this week.
First base is a position that the Cubs are looking to stabilize.
They had a rotating group at that position last season and would like to avoid that in 2024 and beyond.
Alonso not only provides plus defense, but is one of the best power hitters in the game.
Since he entered the MLB in 2019, he has a slash line of .251/.342/.528 with 192 home runs and 498 RBI in one of the most pitcher-friendly ballparks in the league.
His power would certainly translate to Wrigley Field.
But would the Mets be willing to trade such an important part of their team who has become the face of their franchise?
"Stearns, who was officially introduced right after the regular season, wants to put his stamp on the team. He is open to Alonso trade discussions and Alonso extension discussions," Bowden reports.
It seems like Chicago might not be done shocking the baseball world and could make a serious blockbuster move to get this superstar slugger.
