Chicago Cubs' Playoffs Dream Coming To End
Reality is starting to set in for the Chicago Cubs after another late inning defeat might have delivered the death blow to their season.
The Cubs are now on a four-game losing streak after being swept by the Atlanta Braves and losing their first game against the Milwaukee Brewers.
It's a disappointing reality they're now in.
In all likelihood, Chicago is going to miss the MLB Playoffs for the third consecutive season.
They were given a 92.4% chance by FanGraphs to play postseason baseball back on Sept. 6.
That number is now 4.3%.
"We’ve got to win every game. It’s been that way for a while now," manager David Ross said.
Unfortunately, that would no longer be good enough as they don't control their own destiny anymore.
Going 6-14 in their last 20 games has put them in this situation.
The Cubs will need major help from the Miami Marlins, and now Cincinnati Reds, for them to make the playoffs.
It looked like Chicago had made the ultimate turnaround, going from under .500 in the middle of summer to holding a comfortable position in the second Wild Card position.
Maybe they got hot at the wrong time. Maybe they were overachieving for what the ceiling of this roster actually was capable of this season.
Veteran pitcher Kyle Hendricks said, "We haven't been in this situation in a couple of years, so maybe a little bit of a learning curve. But at the end of the day, we're doing everything we can out there."
It's true. They're still fighting for their playoff lives.
That's evident.
Things haven't gone their way down the stretch during the worst time for a losing streak to appear.
"It’s kind of in our DNA to continue to fight and grind. That’s who we are," shortstop Dansby Swanson said.
They have two more games to win and hope they can get some good luck to go their way.
