Chicago Cubs Top Target Likely Won’t Sign Soon
The Chicago Cubs Spring Training has many things to watch out for. The pending free agency of Cody Bellinger, Craig Counsell's first season, prospects fighting for jobs, and much more. For once in what seems like a very long time, Spring Training is an exciting time for Cubs fans.
Bellinger's decision is a massive one for the organization. If he doesn't return, other signings need to be made. Matt Chapman is the most notable remaining free agent outside of Bellinger. It is uncertain if Chicago would be willing to pay both of them, but the Bellinger seems to be the top target.
At some point, however, they might have to let the former MVP walk and sign a player of Chapman's caliber. Losing out on both of them would be a major failure for an offense that needs as much help as any other in baseball.
According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, Bellinger is not expected to sign this week. While that can always change, Nightengale believes that he will wait another week before his decision.
It is tough to tell if this is a good or bad thing for the Cubs. If they can somehow land Bellinger for a better price, the wait will be worth it. With the possibility that he does not return and Chicago's front office does not make a move if he signs elsewhere, it might be better to just give him the money he is looking for.
The moves that were made this offseason improved the rotation and bullpen. From an offensive standpoint, the Cubs are much worse heading into 2024 as currently constructed.
