Cubs' Heartbreaking Losses Highlight Roller Coaster Year
Entering Thursday, it's Deja vu all over again for the Chicago Cubs.
How will they respond to a heartbreaking loss they suffered late in a game that had major playoff implications?
The Cubs were able to pick themselves up for Wednesday's contest after a shocking dropped ball in the outfield by their sure handed right fielder Seiya Suzuki on Tuesday cost them that game late.
Once again, in this game, Chicago held an early lead and another lead late.
It looked like they were on their way to victory when veteran catcher Yan Gomes singled in a run to go up 4-3 during the top of the ninth inning.
But the next frame, their fill in closer, Mark Leiter Jr., gave up a deep home run that sent the game into extra innings.
The Cubs lost their second consecutive heartbreaking game when the Atlanta Braves hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th.
Once again, this team has to pick themselves up and continue fighting for their postseason lives with four games remaining.
Second baseman Nico Hoerner promises that they'll keep pushing until the end.
"I thought we brought it [Wednesday]. Just like we’re going to bring it [Thursday] and the next day, and trust that in the next four games, that plays out as best it can. That’s what we can control," he told Jordan Bastian of MLB.com.
They have their work cut out for them.
Chicago is now on the outside of the playoffs looking in, tied with the Miami Marlins for the final Wild Card spot, but on the losing end of the tiebreaker.
These heartbreaking losses against the Braves highlights the roller coaster year that this club has had.
It once looked like they were completely out of the playoff picture during the summer. Then they were comfortably in the postseason after becoming one of the hottest teams in the league.
Now, they're back in chase mode, looking to find their top form during the most important stretch.
With four games left, the Cubs are waiting for their roller coaster to go back up at the right time.
