Cubs 'Possible Landing Spot' For Gold Glover After Turner Joins Blue Jays
The Chicago Cubs are looking to get some last minute deals completed before the start of the new season.
They had major aspirations heading into the winter with their sites set on landing multiple stars.
It hasn't quite gone to plan, but they could still make roster upgrades before it's all said and done.
The Cubs were viewed as a team who was going to be the most aggressive in the second half of the offseason.
They landed Shota Imanaga and Hector Neris on the open market, and traded for star prospect Michael Busch and veteran reliever Yency Almonte.
Cody Bellinger reunion rumors continue to run rampant as both parties agreeing to a deal makes the most sense at this point in free agency.
However, it doesn't seem like Chicago is willing to meet his asking price.
They reportedly could pivot to another star player still available after one of their free agent targets agreed to a deal with the Toronto Blue Jays.
"Matt Chapman’s market clarifies further with Justin Turner going to the Blue Jays. The Cubs and Giants are among Chapman’s possible landing spots," insider Jon Morosi reports.
This has been a player the Cubs have been linked to throughout the offseason.
Matt Chapman is a four-time Gold Glove winner, having just won another in 2023, and fits the defensive mindset the organization wants from their infield.
He also has been a solid hitter throughout his career, posting a slash line of .240/.329/.461 and OPS+ of 117.
He's hit 20-plus home runs in four out of his seven seasons and has driven in 50-plus runs in five out of seven years.
Chapman would be a great addition for Chicago.
His defense would be a massive upgrade and would give new manager Craig Counsell an everyday third basemen that allows Christopher Morel to stay in the designated hitter role as he continues to develop his own defense.
This feels like a move the Cubs should heavily pursue.
It all depends on how aggressive the front office is willing to be.
