MLB Insider Gives Concerning Update in Cubs' Pursuit of Yoshinobu Yamamoto
A new update about the Chicago Cubs' pursuit of Yoshinobu Yamamoto has surfaced.
On Tuesday, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reported that the Cubs won't get into a bidding war for the Japanese superstar.
"The Cubs and Red Sox are also expected to take their shot at Yamamoto, though neither is likely to get involved in a bidding war if the Yankees and Mets try to one-up each other, as many expect."
Not getting into a bidding war for a potential Top-5 pitcher in baseball is certainly disappointing to hear for Chicago fans.
On Wednesday, MLB insider Jon Heyman said that he hasn't heard the Cubs are in the mix.
"Red Sox, Blue Jays, and Phillies, those are the other three teams I've heard. So those three will join the Dodgers, Giants, Mets, and Yankees. Seven teams to choose from. Could be one or two others. I have not heard the Cubs lately or the Cardinals. I could say it's getting too rich, but I think the fact that he hasn't really talked money with anybody, may suggest that he is really just looking for one of the coastal teams."
With the money that the club gave Craig Counsell to make him the highest-paid manager in MLB history, the expectation was that the Cubs were going to spend money.
If they don't spend major money in free agency to improve this roster, it doesn't make much sense as to why they paid Counsell the way that they did.
Coming into the offseason, it was clear that Chicago needed to upgrade their talent.
Thus far, they haven't done that at all.
