Mets Take Aim At Cubs Executive for Scouting Role
On the heels of losing Craig Breslow to the Boston Red Sox, the Chicago Cubs may be losing another key part of their front office, per MLB.com.
The New York Mets, now led by former Milwaukee Brewers president of baseball operations David Stearns, is discussing hiring Dan Kantrovitz to its baseball staff.
Right now, Kantrovitz is the Cubs’ vice president of scouting. Before joining Chicago, he was an assistant general manager with the Oakland Athletics and the director of scouting for the St. Louis Cardinals. He broke into baseball as the assistant scouting director for the Cardinals in 2004.
He was drafted by St. Louis in 2001, but a shoulder injury ended his baseball career.
Kantrovitz has been responsible for leading the Cubs’ farm system, which has progressed into one of the best in baseball. That work paid off late this season with the call-ups of outfielder Peter Crow-Armstrong, outfielder Alexander Canario and pitcher Jordan Wicks.
The system is ranked among the Top 5 in baseball by three different publications or web sites, including MLB.com.
Breslow left Chicago earlier this week to take the president of baseball operations job with the Red Sox. He was also a former pitcher, but he carved out a 12-year career in the Majors and won a World Series with the Red Sox in 2013.
He joined the Cubs as an executive in 2019.
Chicago is still smarting from missing the playoffs after a collapse in September saw them fall out of both the NL Central and Wild Card race.
