Yankees Linked to Chicago Cubs Star in Potential Blockbuster Free Agent Deal
The gamble for the Chicago Cubs to keep players at the trade deadline instead of selling again seems to be paying off.
They are sitting two-and-a-half games back in the NL Central standings entering Tuesday and firmly hold a Wild Card spot if they're not able to chase down the Milwaukee Brewers.
One of the biggest reasons for their success has been the resurgent play of their star Cody Bellinger, who signed a one-year deal this past offseason.
There is mutual interest between the Cubs and Bellinger for a return when the outfielder hits free agency after the season, but other teams will by vying to sign him to their roster.
USA TODAY's MLB Insider Bob Nightengale reports that the New York Yankees are one of the teams who have major interest in the 28-year-old former MVP.
"The price-tag will be heavy, exceeding $200 million, perhaps even seeking more than $300 million. The most aggressive suitors are expected to be: The Cubs, San Francisco Giants, San Diego Padres and New York Yankees," he wrote.
The Yankees are always a threat for any of the top free agents on the market with their deep pockets and ability to spend. They could drive the price up and sway Bellinger to play baseball in New York with a big contract.
Adding a player like Bellinger to their roster would address some of the offensive struggles that has taken place this season. The Yankees have the second fewest hits and second lowest batting average, while also ranking towards the bottom in runs scored and OPS.
The elite defense of the outfielder is also something that New York would be interested in adding as they've had a revolving cycle of players due to injuries and poor performance.
Chicago's star is going to be a heavily sought after player on the market. They'll have to be super aggressive and willing to spend if they want him to return.
