D-backs Bats Erupt For 12 Runs To Finish Off Rockies
Today's game could not have started worse for the Diamondbacks. Before taking their first swing of the bat, they found themselves trailing 4-0. However, that would only serve to be a temporary setback, as they came back to blow out the Colorado Rockies 12-5 at Chase Field. The win gives Arizona their first series win since taking three of four from the Reds on August 24th-27th.
D-backs hitters drew five walks and were hit by four pitches in the game, creating extra scoring opportunities that they capitalized on. Arizona was 7-for-14 with runners in scoring position, scoring in six separate innings. Their biggest hit came off the bat of Alek Thomas, who crushed a go-ahead three-run home run in the third.
The home run took Zach Davies, who was completely ineffective from the get-go, off the hook for a loss. Davies allowed five runs in three innings, perhaps even more, had Corbin Carroll not made a leaping catch to rob Ezequiel Tovar of a bases-clearing triple for the final out of the third.Â
The bullpen stepped up to the challenge for the second consecutive day. The D-backs' much-maligned relief corps held the Rockies hit-less for the final six innings, allowing the hitters to get back into the dugout and keep tacking on runs. Tommy Pham had a big day, going 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, a walk, three RBI, and three runs scored.
Corbin Carroll exited the game after being hit in the forearm/wrist area with a pitch in the fourth with a right wrist contusion. Carroll said the ball hit him in the meaty part under the wrist and they'll see how it feels tomorrow. The D-backs have dodged another bullet with another injury scare for their star rookie.
Pending the results of the Mariners vs. Reds and Dodgers vs. Marlins game, the D-backs are half a game back of the final Wild Card as they head to Chicago for a series with huge playoff implications. The organization will also be taking their top prospect with them, as they're set to promote Jordan Lawlar to the big league roster according to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic.Â
