Pitching Matchups:

Ryne Nelson's (0-0, 5.40 ERA) major league career to date has been trial by fire. Last year he faced the Padres twice and the Dodgers once. His first start this year was against the Padres on April 3rd.  Today he faces the Dodgers in Chase field, so he's drawn the toughest opponents possible in his short career

In Nelson's last outing the Padres jumped him early for two runs in the first inning and one in the second to stake out to a 3-0 lead. But he settled down to throw three scoreless innings after that, ending up with a no decision. The D-backs later took a late lead in the game only to lose in the bottom in the 9th

Nelson's pitch usage was a little different in his first start compared to last year. He threw fewer four seam fastballs and a lot more sliders last week against San Diego.

Michael Grove (0-0, 6.75 ERA) is on the mound today for the Dodgers.  The 26 year old was a second round pick in 2018 out of West Virginia. The right hander made six starts last year with a 4.60 ERA, but his rookie status is still intact.  His first start of 2023 came against the Rockies, when he surrendered three runs in four innings, also on April 3rd. Grove throws a four seamer, slider, and curveball. He's usually around 93-94 with the fastball.

Roster Move:

As reported by Steve Gilbert of MLB.com, RHP Peter Soloman has a locker in the clubhouse this morning. So he appears to be the replacement for the injured Zach Davies who came out of yesterday's game with a strained oblique.

Lineups:

Dodgers at Diamondbacks April 9th

Ketel Marte gets his first day off so far this year. Red hot Geraldo Perdomo is in the lineup at second base, pairing with Nick Ahmed at shortstop.  Pavin Smith is batting third today. He was called up late yesterday to replace Kyle Lewis who went to the injured list due to illness.

The Dodgers lineup is topped off by Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman as always. Freeman's numbers in Chase field are ridiculous, .378/.436/.694,  1.131 OPS.  James Outman has been a terror so far in 2023, batting .348 with three homers and nine RBI's. He also has seven walks.
