Bobby Miller Set for MLB Debut: Dodgers' Top Prospect Takes the Mound Against Braves
The moment has arrived for Bobby Miller, the Dodgers' number 1 pitching prospect. Today, he'll step onto the mound in Atlanta and make his MLB debut against the Braves. Manager Dave Roberts had a message for Miller ahead of his first start.
"Just be yourself. Don't try to throw 110. Just throw 100 and then it'll be there... Enjoy the moment. You've earned it. You belong here. And go compete."
Much has been made of Miller's 98-100 mile per hour fastball. But it takes more than high heat to get big league hitters out. Roberts spoke earlier in the week about Miller needing to improve his command to bring his game to the next level.
“The first thing is command. When you’ve got a big fastball you can bully guys and overpower guys. And as you get higher up, you can’t do that. Guys can spoil pitches, they can hit the fastball. Yeah, it’s two part, it’s commanding the fastball and it’s also understanding when and how to use the breaking stuff because skillset wise, there’s a lot of talent.”
The 24-year-old Miller isn't getting an easy landing for his debut facing on the most potent offenses in baseball. Although it may not be the most ideal for Miller, that's just the hand the Dodgers were dealt. The starting rotation is decimated by injuries with not only Julio Urias and Dustin May on the injured list, but also guys like Ryan Pepiot, Michael Grove, and even Walker Buehler who may not pitch this year.
Roberts addressed the situation and took the positive route in emphasizing the opportunity for the rookies Miller and Gavin Stone.
"It's a great opportunity for these young pitchers... It's up to all of us to make them feel comfortable and perform at a high level."
The stage is set for Bobby Miller as he takes his first steps in what could be a promising career at the major league level.
