Dodgers News: Bobby Miller isn't Changing Anything with His Pitch Mix
Dodgers prospect Bobby Miller has pure stuff on the mound that's nearly unrivaled in the minor leagues, with a triple-digit fastball that Baseball Prospectus said might be his fourth-best pitch. As the 2022 season went on, he harnessed that stuff better and better, with a 3.38 ERA in Triple-A that was more than a run better than he'd posted in Double-A.
There is still work to be done for Miller. According to Keith Law of The Athletic, Miller's biggest weakness is that he's not nearly as effective from the stretch as he is from the windup, with opposing hitters posting an OPS 264 points higher with runners on base than with no one on.
For what it's worth, Miller agrees there's nothing wrong with his stuff, as he told Doug McKain of Dodgers Nation from spring training at Camelback Ranch in Glendale, Arizona. McKain asked Miller if there are any tweaks he's working on to his pitch mix, and Miller shot that down quickly.
"No, same mix as last year. I've got my mix down, I'm not messing with any new pitches or anything. It's four-seam, occasional two-seam, curveball, slider, changeup."
This is very good news. The first step to progress is identifying what needs progress, so it's a good (if not surprising) thing Miller and the Dodgers staff recognize there's nothing wrong with the stuff or the pitch mix.
This spring should be interesting for Miller, likely his lat spring training as a minor leaguer. He'll undoubtedly make adjustments to get him ready for the big leagues, but the pitch mix won't be among them.
