Dodgers News: Dave Roberts Reacts to Manny Machado Contract Extension
The Dodgers took on their divsion rival San Diego Padres in their third spring training game on Monday.
LA came out victoruis picking up their second win in spring ball, 7-6; however, things didn't go quite as planned with their infielder Gavin Lux going down with an injury.
Nonetheless, Dave Roberts spoke to the media before the game, and Doug McKain of Dodgers Nation asked him about Manny Machado and his brand new contract extension.
Roberts said he is happy for his former player.
"I'm very happy for Manny. I love Manny. Heckuva baseball player. I think it's good for baseball. I think Mr. Seidler spending money, getting the right guy to build around. It's a good move and now we just have to figure out how to get him out."
The Padres All-Star signed an extension with San Diego for 11 years and $350 million. His orignal contract was worth 10 years and $300 million with the option to opt out of his contract at the end of 2023, which he signed in 2019.
The righty slugger was planning on opting out and becoming a free agent at the end of the season. The Dodgers were among the favorites to land the third baseman, but now he will remain a Padre for life.
This will take the 30-year-old into his age-41 season, and this contract makes his deal the fourth-largest in MLB history, trailing Mike Trout, Aaron Judge, and Dodgers superstar Mookie Betts.
Manny helped turn San Diego into a true contender, and will hope to help them capture their first ever World Series title.
Let's hope the Boys in Blue have something to say about that for years to come.
