Dodgers News: Dave Roberts Talks Mookie Betts' Future with the Club
With Mookie Betts serving as one of the veteran leaders on the Dodgers, manager Dave Roberts recognizes how instrumental of a role Betts carries within the clubhouse.
Aside from his leadership, Mookie is also one of the top players on the team and in the league. But how long can he keep that up? Betts is signed through the 2032 season and, in the eyes of Roberts, things might change down the road.
In a recent interview with MLB insider Bob Nightengale of USA Today, Roberts discussed Betts' future with the team and future on the field.
Dodgers outfielder Mookie Betts, 30, who still has 10 years remaining on his 12-year, $365 million contract, likely will end his career at second base, manager Dave Roberts predicts.
“We have so much depth on the infield now, I don’t see it happening this year,’’ Roberts says, “but as Father Time takes it toll, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Mookie play the last four years of his career at second base.’’
Following the Dodgers’ acquisition of Betts in 2020, he has been a force on the field and even helped them win the World Series during his first year with the club.
Betts has certainly solidified himself as a valuable piece within the franchise and clearly has a lot of time left on his contract to remain a Dodger for years to come.
The 30-year-old does what he does best at the right field— it’s a position he has won six Gold Gloves within the past seven years. Although Betts is one of the best players in his current position, he does have the skill to make adjustments to his game with ease.
Only time will tell if Betts will, in fact, be making that transition to second base. One thing is for certain— as the Dodgers look to build on their recent success, they will be counting on Betts to continue to take a big role within the team.
