Dodgers News: How LA Can Replace Gavin Lux at Shortstop?
Gavin Lux was expected to take on a big role this upcoming season as the Dodgers' starting shortstop. Now he and the team are faced with a big hurdle.
On Monday, Lux suffered from an injury to what seemed to be his right knee and was carted off the field. The following day, manager Dave Roberts announced that the 25-year-old tore his ACL and will be missing the 2023 season.
With Lux missing significant time due to injury, this leaves the Dodgers with a major question mark at the shortstop position.
The first approach LA could choose to do is to replace Lux with an internal solution. The most likely option is Chris Taylor, who has experience at shortstop as well. At the same time, Taylor is also a valuable utility player who can play multiple positions, and the Dodgers may not want to lock him into a starting role.
Another internal option is Miguel Rojas, who is a veteran player with experience at shortstop. This would also come with cons, as he has not been that great of a hitter and if he were to be a starter, it would open up a hole for the backup infield position.
Roberts talked about the possibility of using both Rojas and Taylor as shortstop options when speaking with Kirsten Watson after Monday’s game.
If the Dodgers are not satisfied with their internal options, they could always turn to the trade market or free agency to find a replacement for Lux. When looking at who is still unsigned, veteran Jose Iglesias would probably be a solid option.
If external solutions don’t work in LA’s favor, it is a good thing that the Dodgers do have some options in-house already. Regardless of which route the team takes to overcome this obstacle, the Dodgers will aim to weather the storm even with Lux out.
