Dodgers News: Jason Heyward Shares Appreciation for Teammates in Award Win
When the Los Angeles Dodgers signed Jason Heyward to a Minor League contract last November, most Dodger fans weren’t excited. Heyward struggled with the Chicago Cubs, and the Dodgers didn’t need an aging outfielder.
As usual, Andrew Friedman knew better than Dodger fans.
Heyward revamped his powerful swing before spring training. His Gold Glove defense in right field hadn’t changed. Even before he made the Dodger major league roster, he provided much-needed leadership, especially guiding rookie center fielder James Outman.
At the end of the 2023 season, Heyward is competing for the National League Comeback Player of the Year. This week he was presented with the Roy Campanella Award given to the most inspirational Dodger voted by teammates and the coaching staff. He was humbled by receiving the award.
“When you have your teammates acknowledge you and want to make sure you get recognized for it, it’s really special. Because that’s not my intent. That’s just part of who I am and have always been. I want the best for everyone on and off the field. First year with the team, it’s very, very special.”

Heyward’s contributions on the field helped the Dodgers to run away with the National League Western Division title. Playing right field against right-handed pitching, Heyward has a .268 batting average with 15 home runs, 40 RBI, and a .825 OPS.
Heyward enabled the Dodgers to play Mookie Betts second base against right-handed pitching. This enabled Betts to stay fresh by playing second base over half of the time.
Undoubtedly, Heyward will have an integral role in the Dodgers’ success during the postseason. Now, many Dodger fans hope the Dodgers will re-sign Heyward for the 2024 season.
