Most Dodger fans were excited when their favorite team reacquired Joe Kelly from the Chicago White Sox.

Kelly is having a marvelous 2023 season despite the numbers not exactly backing that up. Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes talked about the decision to bring him back.

“We know Joe really well, and the stuff has been arguably the best it’s ever been; it’s elite,” Gomes said. “His velocity is the highest it’s ever been. He’s added the slider. His four-seamer is playing as well as it ever has. And we love the [will to] compete.”

Kelly now has a 99-mile-per-hour fastball, a sharp curveball, a changeup, and a slider.

During his major league career, Kelly has struggled with his control. This year, he has 42 strikeouts and 13 walks in 29.1 innings.

"All everyone ever sees is wins and losses and ERA," Kelly said. "They don’t see the other numbers that ultimately really matter, that show how good a pitcher really is."

The presence of Kelly in the young Dodger bullpen is huge. Since he has pitched in every situation, he doesn’t get nervous and can advise the young relievers about how to handle those high-pressure situations, even in the playoffs.

The acquisition of Kelly was excellent. Kelly was one of the best best available relievers, and the White Sox didn’t require the Dodgers to empty their minor league system to obtain him along with Lance Lynn who hurled 7 innings Tuesday.
