Dodgers News: Mookie Betts Shares That He Gets His Competitiveness From His Family
Mookie Betts' family thrives off their competitive nature. It's literally in Mookie's DNA as his mother, Diana Collins, had him just hours after competing in a bowling tournament.
In a recent interview with CBS News, Mookie, his wife Brianna, and Dianna shared a little about the competitive nature of the family. Mookie's mom started the interview off with this:
"My family's very competitive. I mean, we play marbles and we're trying to win. When Mookie came along, it was just par for the course. You have to learn to be competitive. Or we don't play with you."
From the very beginning, Diana knew her baby boy was destined for greatness. So much so that she named him Markus Lynn Betts so his initials were MLB.
And Mookie's definitely lived up to that mantra as he proves to be one of the best players in the game at the moment. From his 2018 campaign where he became the first player to win the MVP, Golden Glove, Silver Slugger, and the World Series Championship all in the same year.
He then came back two years later to win the World Series again this time with the Boys in Blue.
So how does Mookie manage to balance his competitiveness and intense desire for success not just in baseball but in everything he does?
The answer that he shared was that he doesn't do it well because he doesn't give himself enough grace. But yet, he said he doesn't plan on changing that anytime soon.
"Because it made me who I am. I'm not perfect, but I also strive to be perfect. And the closer I can get the perfect, the better I'll be."
Clearly, that mindset has been working for him across the past nine years that he's spent playing major league baseball.
But it also goes beyond the sport itself and that's why he pours his 100% into everything he becomes involved in. From charity events to bowling and even being involved in film productions, you can always bet that Mookie will put his whole heart and soul into every single thing he does.
