Dodgers News: Second Base is Miguel Vargas's to Lose

Dodgers manager shared his thoughts on placing the young prospect in a new position.

Miguel Vargas is expecting to play a significant role for the Dodgers this 2023 season. The young Cuban has already shown a lot of potential after hitting at every level of the minor leagues.

With the start of Spring Training less than two weeks away, Vargas is working on all facets of his game and is expected to play as LA’s starting second baseman this season.

At FanFest over the weekend, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts shared his thoughts on placing the talented prospect in the second base position:

"I think as far as the rangeability and foot speed, Miguel can handle it. I think he needs to continue to work low to the ground as an infielder, but his baseball IQ, jump on the baseball, I think it makes more sense."

Last week, Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes also voiced opinions on having Vargas at second. Gomes highlighted how the 23-year-old posses incredible power and speed, which sets him up for success in the role.

“Vargy has been taking a ton of reps at second, some at third, but we think at this point that’s his focus and that’s trending really well. He’s a great athlete, and he’s working incredibly hard." ... "Vargas is our second- or third-fastest guy on the team, which is probably not appreciated at all. So he’s also a good athlete. It’s more about getting him reps and getting his feel at second base. I think a combination of it all is really strong.”

Last year, Vargas made his MLB debut against the San Francisco Giants but went just 8-for-47 in 18 major league games. During that time, Vargas also made starts at first base, third base, left field, and designated hitter.

As he becomes more comfortable at second base this season, Vargas is sure to create even more value in the clubhouse. After all, this implementation will allow for more success as a team. For one, having Vargas at second means that the Dodgers can keep Max Muncy where he plays best— at third base.

As a top prospect, Vargas has what it takes to handle the new position and expand as a versatile player.
