Dodgers Recap: LA Loses a Game They Should Have Won Against Padres as Pitching Collapses
The Los Angeles Dodgers lost to the San Diego Padres 11-to-8 on Monday, in a game they had no business losing. After the third inning, the Dodgers had a five-run lead, but the Padres continued chipping away at the lead. The Dodgers should have won, but their pitching fell apart. The magic number remains at seven.
Bad defense led to the Padres’ first run even though Gavin Stone looked good and composed. In the third, the Padres tied the score. Manny Machado homered in the fourth, and another run scored to make it 7-4. Stone had a fantastic changeup and changed speeds effectively. In the sixth, Machado socked a two-run homer. In his 5.1 innings, Stone allowed 7 runs while walking 2 and striking out 1.
On the offensive side of things, Betts hit his 39th homer to lead off the first inning.
With the bases loaded in the second, Miguel Rojas was hit by a pitch to drive in a run, but the Dodgers stranded the bases loaded.
Max Muncy blasted his 35th homer of the season in the third. Then, Chris Taylor’s single drove in J.D. Martinez, and Betts doubled in three runs.
Caleb Ferguson relieved Stone in the sixth and let a run score to tie the game but got out of trouble.
Ryan Brasier pitched a perfect seventh, while Shelby Miller hurled a scoreless eighth. Evan Phillips allowed a 3-run homer to Juan Soto and a solo shot to Xander Bogaerts in the 9th after a bad defensive inning.
The Dodgers threatened in the ninth and Martinez’s single scored Freddie Freeman and the Dodgers loaded the bases, but Chris Taylor couldn’t come through with the bases loaded and the Dodgers dropped a game they should have won.
