Dodgers Roster News: LA Inks Free Agent Catcher as Will Smith Heads to Injured List
The Dodgers announced the signing of journeyman catcher Austin Wynns on Sunday morning. He joins LA on a MLB deal and will be added to the active roster ahead of the day's game. The move was needed after Will Smith was placed on the 7-day injured list with a concussion.
To make room on the 40 man roster for Wynns, reliever Alex Reyes was transferred to the 60-day IL.
As of publishing time, there's no word on when Smith sustained the concussion. He last played on Wednesday in San Francisco going 2-3 against the Giants. More info to come on this.
The 32-year-old Wynns has played for the Orioles and most recently the Giants in his career. He hit .259 with 3 home runs and 21 runs batted in for SF last year. In 181 career MLB games, he has a .230/.274/.335 triple slash line with 12 homers and 51 RBI.
Reyes isn't expected to return from 2022 shoulder surgery until June or July, so the 60-day IL move shouldn't affect his timetable.
Austin Barnes will be the primary catcher while Smith is sidelined.
