Dodgers Rumors: Columnist Sees Less Aggressive Deadline for LA While Ohtani Looms in Offseason
Despite all the odds against them, the Los Angeles Dodgers remain one of the best teams in baseball. They have suffered a plethora of injuries this season and have seen numerous players go through regression. But they have survived through it all so far, and with the trade deadline coming up, they will be looking to add to their roster.
As always, LA is linked to multiple star players as the deadline approaches, and they very well could make a splash. The team they have is worth investing in for this potential World Series run so the front office could decide to go all-in.
But one pundit sees LA taking a different approach to this deadline. MLB insider Bob Nightengale of USA Today seems to believe that the Dodgers will likely only make moves around the edges as they gear up for the 2024 winter.
“Sure, they will come away with a veteran starter, and some bullpen help too, but they’re gearing up for Ohtani to be an integral part of 2024 and the rest of the decade, while still hanging onto their top prospects. Their ultra-aggressiveness begins this winter. “
Per USA Today
Nightingale makes an interesting assessment there because it’s no secret that LA will be going for Ohtani this winter. They don't want to do anything that could change that fact, so taking on a big salary at the deadline is likely out of the question.
But this team needs to focus on the now as well. They are a very good team with a good chance of winning the World Series this season. It's great to be looking ahead to potentially getting Ohtani, but they should also be focusing on the present.
President of Baseball Operations Andrew Friedman has his work cut out for him over this next week or so. He will be tasked with toeing the line between this season, and not screwing up their chances at Ohtani. But if anyone can do it, it's him.
No matter what the Dodgers do at the deadline, they need to shore up a few holes on the team. If they can do that, then this team will create major problems for opponents come October.
