Dodgers Rumors: Insider Links LA to Future Hall of Famer as Trade Deadline Nears
There’s no secret the Dodgers need starting pitching to compete with the elite teams in baseball. While the Dodgers already acquired Lance Lynn from the Chicago White Sox, they need another starter, particularly when Clayton Kershaw’s return is delayed.
With the New York Mets shipping Max Scherzer to the Texas Rangers, Justin Verlander has also been linked to the Dodgers.
Coming off winning the third Cy Young and second world championship of his Hall-of-Fame-caliber career, Verlander signed a 2-year deal with an option that becomes automatic if he pitches 140 innings in 2024 with the New York Mets.
As every baseball fan knows, the Mets have had a disappointing season despite Steven Cohen’s wealth. Verlander had an IL stint because of a low-grade teres strain to begin the 2023 season. When he came off the IL, he struggled, but in July, Verlander has been excellent with a 1.69 ERA. At 40, Verlander is still one of the best major league starters.
With Julio Urías probably walking after this season and the distinct possibility of Clayton Kershaw not returning to the Dodgers for the 2024 season, the Dodgers need starting pitching for next season. The Dodger front office doesn’t mind high AAV but wants short-term deals to maintain their payroll flexibility.
For 2024, the Dodgers are committed to only $109 million. The Dodgers would have a right-handed ace who knows how to pitch. Verlander can help the young starters learn how to succeed at the major league level. Verlander would be a great acquisition for the Dodgers.
