The Dodgers have some tough decisions to make this offseason in regard to how they shape their roster, and one of those is what they do with designated hitter J.D. Martinez. Martinez is entering free agency, and there is interest in the team bringing him back.

However, there is a catch when it comes to their reported interest, and it’s that he is their "Plan B" for the offseason. Plan A is the team pursuing two-way superstar free agent Shohei Ohtani to be the designated hitter for this team going forward, and they want to see how that all plays out first.

If they fail to land Ohtani, then the Dodgers would likely pivot back to Martinez. But they do run the risk of him signing elsewhere first. And it seems that there are multiple teams on the West Coast that are interested in him other than the Dodgers.

MLB insider Jon Morosi has reported that the Seattle Mariners and San Francisco Giants could give the Dodgers a run for their money when it comes to Martinez. He would make sense with booth squads, so LA has some choices to make.

“I do think the Dodgers are a strong fit, as are the Giants, and the Mariners”

Per Jon Morosi via MLB Network

Martinez was one of the more productive members of the Dodgers from this past season, and he was only making $10 million for the year. He signed with LA in the offseason to boost his value around the league, and he did that to perfection.

He helped the Dodgers offense set records this past season and now is expected to receive a nice contract in free agency from whoever signs him. He hit .271 with 33 home runs and 103 runs batted in, despite missing some time due to injury.

A reunion is certainly possible with Martinez, but the Dodgers owe it to themselves to see if they can get Ohtani first. Hopefully, we will know who the team's designated hitter will be for next season sooner rather than later.
