Dodgers Rumors: MLB Insider Predicts What LA Will Do With Max Muncy’s 2024 Option

Only two ways this can go.
In this story:

Dodgers third baseman Max Muncy, like the rest of LA's offense, didn't have his best showing in the playoffs for the second straight season.

LA now has a decision to make as they hold a club option on the veteran infielder who's become more polarizing in recent seasons.

Speculation persists on whether or not he'll leave but Thomas Harrigan of MLB.com is pretty certain that Muncy won't be gone next season.

"Look for the Dodgers to pick up Muncy’s option after the infielder slugged 36 homers with 105 RBIs and an .808 OPS over 135 games in 2023. The 33-year-old doesn’t hit for average, but he walks a ton and has reached the 35-homer mark in four of the past five full seasons."

Muncy's average will never compete for a batting title as he hit just above .210 in 2023.

However, in an era of three true outcome baseball, Muncy is the quintessential modern power hitter.

In his five full seasons with the franchise, Muncy has clubbed at least 35 home runs in each of them aside from 2022 when he was recovering from elbow surgery.

One of the most prolific power hitters of the past half-decade, LA would stand to lose one of the best bats in their lineup if they chose to let him walk.

The 33-year-old won't impress anybody with his defense either but his bat remains a steady presence in Dave Roberts' lineup.

Recent Toronto Blue Jay Matt Chapman will be a free agent this winter as a better glove option at third base, but Muncy's bat has proven more consistent in the past few seasons.

For as many deficiencies as he may have, Muncy's option for 2024 might be the team's best choice for manning the hot corner next season.
